All the exhibits shown on this web site come from Thirsk Museums extensive collection. Some are on permanent display in the Museum, others form part of themed displays which change from time to time. We encourage you to come to Thirsk Museum to see them for yourself and learn more about their history. If you wish to study any of the featured documents in more detail and are unable to visit
the Museum, we can usually provide photocopies for this
purpose. Please We continue to seek additions to our Home Front archive and would be grateful for the donation of more WW2 items or the opportunity to copy further photographs or documents linked to the wartime experiences of folk from Thirsk and the surrounding district. Thirsk Museum Thirsk Museum was established with the aim of preserving objects that were disappearing from everyday use, but which told something of the history and customs of past generations who had lived and worked in Thirsk and the surrounding district. The building chosen for the Museum is itself of historical interest. In 1755 Thomas Lord, founder of Lord’s Cricket Ground, was born here. It also stands close to the surgery where the author and vet James Herriot worked for many years. The Museum opened to the public in 1977 and has been the centre for local history ever since. Our services As well as preserving items of local historical interest, Thirsk Museum offers
a range of services:
