About us

All the exhibits shown on this web site come from Thirsk Museum’s extensive collection. Some are on permanent display in the Museum, others form part of themed displays which change from time to time. We encourage you to come to Thirsk Museum to see them for yourself and learn more about their history.

If you wish to study any of the featured documents in more detail and are unable to visit the Museum, we can usually provide photocopies for this purpose. Please contact us for details. Some of the documents can be viewed on this site at a scale suitable for reading - just look for the 'Read this document' link after the main description.

We continue to seek additions to our Home Front archive and would be grateful for the donation of more WW2 items or the opportunity to copy further photographs or documents linked to the wartime experiences of folk from Thirsk and the surrounding district.

Thirsk Museum

Thirsk Museum was established with the aim of preserving objects that were disappearing from everyday use, but which told something of the history and customs of past generations who had lived and worked in Thirsk and the surrounding district.

The building chosen for the Museum is itself of historical interest. In 1755 Thomas Lord, founder of Lord’s Cricket Ground, was born here. It also stands close to the surgery where the author and vet James Herriot worked for many years. The Museum opened to the public in 1977 and has been the centre for local history ever since.

Our services

As well as preserving items of local historical interest, Thirsk Museum offers a range of services:

  • Tracing family history:  We can offer advice to people tracing the history of their family, their house or the area where they live. Also we can often help individuals who live far from Thirsk, perhaps even in other countries, but who are aware of family ties with the town or its surrounding areas and want to find out more.

  • Identifying and dating objects:  We can assist in learning more about the origin and age of historical objects, especially if they are connected in some way with Thirsk.

  • Research:  With access to record offices and reference libraries in Northallerton and York, we can help with your research project or carry out research on your behalf.
