Welcome

The Second World War brought with it the concept of the Home Front - the civilian contribution to the war effort at home. In this way it touched the lives of everyone in Britain, and the people of Thirsk and its neighbouring villages in the North Riding of Yorkshire were no exception.

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day in 2005, Thirsk Museum recalls the wartime experiences of local people through this unique collection of objects, photographs and documents.

If you lived in or around Thirsk during the war, you’ll find much to remind you of those times as you explore this online archive. For younger generations, it offers a vivid insight into a period when war cast its shadow over this historic market town.
